Notary Public

A notary public is a person appointed by the government (in Maine, by the Secretary of State) to serve as an impartial witness. Notaries perform a wide variery of acts, most commonly administration of oaths and affirmations and taking acknowledgements.

In Maine, notaries also have the authority to officiate at weddings. Only notaries in Maine, Florida, and South Carolina have this authority.

Dedimus Justice

Dedimus Justice is an office which is unique to Maine. It is a lifetime appointment by the Governor, and has the sole purpose and power of administering the oath or affirmation of office to persons elected or appointed to public office, including Notaries Public.
